The Foundation Sponsors the "National Youth Photography Competition for the Promotion of Environmental Protection"
From March to September 2001, young budding photographers captured scenic China on film for the "National Youth Photography Competition for the Promotion of Environmental Protection" sponsored by the Foundation in collaboration with the China Environmental Journalist Association. The mission of the competition is to raise environmental awareness among the public, particularly among youths, and to encourage active public participation in environmental projects through innovative promotion and education efforts.
The Competition was divided into lower and upper divisions, with 1 first prize, 2 second prizes and 5 third prizes in each division. Students aged 13-19 clicked away to reveal different angles of China at its best - and at its worst.
The Competition unveiled a collection of photographs that are fresh, captivating and imaginative, that raise interesting questions about "earth and life" - the theme central to the Competition. The photographs offer defense against the destruction of our environment.
The first group of young budding photographers was born on 1 September 2001 in an award ceremony in Beijing. Of the 810 entries, 16 won top prizes and about 150 have been chosen for publication for further promotional purposes.
The Competition turned the heads of society; Renmin Daily, CCTV, China Education Daily, China Environmental Daily, etc. helped spread the word. The officials of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, State Environmental Protection Administration and the Ministry of Education lent their support and graced the award ceremony with their presence.
